Commons first home goal helps thrash Sheffield Wednesday

Still on a high from the fantastic result against Leeds in the Carling Cup earlier in the week, Derby were full of enthusiasm and motivation to concentrate on their Championship campaign with their clash against Sheffield Wednesday. Both teams are hovering around mid-table so were keen to outplay the other.

Kris Commons started the ball rolling with his first home goal since the transfer from F*rest at the start of the season. Commons has been assisting shedloads of goals this season and unfortunately missed the target early on in the game when a header went wide. But, the opportunity came when Commons struck from 12 yards, beating Owls’ goalkeeper and ex-Ram Lee Grant, netting his first goal for Derby on home turf.

The goals didn’ stop there neither.

After the break, another ex-Ram Marcus Tudgay couldn’t beat Derby’s Roy Carroll with a lame heading effort but Commons assisted yet again, this time allowing Miles Addison to head home a second for a dominating Derby.

It was Jordan Stewart who wrapped things up for Derby with a clinical left foot strike in the 67th minute, ensuring Derby all three points from three fine goals.

Derby are travelling across the country to face the Tractor Boys next Saturday so here’s hoping to another storming result from our Rams.

Emanuel Villa scores at both ends against Forest

Since the start of the season, this was one of the biggest fixtures on Derby’s schedule – facing up against arch rivals Nottingham Forest, both joining the Championship this season from either end of the Football League.

The nerves were obviously taking over at the start of the game as neither team were able to break the deadlock with uninspiring performances from both sides and a 0-0 scoreline to show for it.

It was in the second half when the drama unfolded.

Emanuel Villa clumsily knocked in an own goal for Forest after Stephen Bywater managed to save a shot from Luke Chambers.

Villa was quick to restore himself though as he connected with a free kick from Jordan Stewart to take the scores level.

The referee and linesmen had the last laugh though as Forest’s Lewis McGugan was sent off after a nasty tackle, eight players were booked, a penalty was rewarded and missed by Nacer Barazite and a last second goal by Miles Addison was disallowed.

Many will say Derby were robbed of three points this time round. The harsh reality is we were unable to beat Forest on home turf so have to step up the gear for the return leg on 21st Feburary.

Clinton Morrison denies Derby away win at Coventry

After the defeat at Blackpool last week, Derby were determined to get back on track with the previous success of their Championship campaign by travelling to local rivals Coventry for a mid-week battle.

Rob Hulse gave Derby the lead in the 41st minute by heading in his fourth goal of the season.

All was looking good for Derby throughout the second half even though a fine volley from Miles Addison was saved by Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood – it should have been in the bag.

But in the dying minutes, Coventry were awarded a controversial throw-in by the linesman which allowed Coventry’s 69th minute substitute Clinton Morrison to hit in his first goal of the season, levelling the scores and giving Coventry a last gasp point.

It was cruel but these sort of games happen and they tend to always happen mid-week. Let’s just look forward to the return leg against Norwich at home on Tuesday and hope for another win.

Steve Davies extends Derby’s unbeaten run to 5 games

Derby have been on a good run over the last four games, mostly drawing but at least with the teams who are heading up the Championship this season.

So with BBC Radio Five Live Extra covering the game when there were numerous Champions League qualifiers simultaneously being played, the media obviously thought it would be an interesting result from two relegatees from the Premiership last season.

Unfortunately, activity was rather limited.

Derby keeper Roy Carroll saved a strong effort from Mehdi Nafti in the first minute, denying the travellers an early lead.

But in the 26th minute, Birmingham’s Quincy Owusu-Abeyie fired in a worthy shot to take the Blues into a lead for the majority of the game.

Miles Addison and Paul Green were the only efforts for Derby that looked to take the home side level but the deadlock was finally broken in the 87th minute when Steve Davies fired home a late goal to give Derby their 5th game unbeaten.

Cardiff deny Derby another potential Welsh win

After the 1-1 draw at Swansea earlier in the week, Derby were hoping to progress against travelling Cardiff at Pride Park this weekend.

It was looking good in the first half. Cardiff put up a good fight as they always do but it was Derby defender Martin Albrechtsen who broke the deadlock, firing home a belter in the 30th minute.

On resuming the match after half time, Cardiff pushed even harder and managed to get level in the 67th minute when Joe Ledley was fouled in the penalty area by Miles Addison, giving Ross McCormack the easy task of slotting in a penalty.

It was another strong performance from Derby and a huge improvement on the side we got used to last season but it’s a shame we’ve still only got one win out of seven games. At least the points are trickling in this season though.
