Derby do the double over Norwich

| Fixtures

Derby 3 Norwich City 1

When Derby travelled across the Norfolk Broads to play Norwich last month, they managed to pull it out the bag and beat the home side 2-1. So the return leg was bound to be interesting with Norwich playing so well and Derby only managing a 1-1 draw at Coventry at the weekend.

Paul Green opened the preceedings with a relatively poor effort but Rob Hulse followed up connecting with yet another fine cross from Kris Commons, whacking the ball in the back of the net to take Derby two up in the first half.

Another effort from Hulse was denied by the bar after the break but it was John Kennedy who threw Norwich a life line when he managed to head in a cross from Sammy Clingan to take the score to 2-1.

This was enough to give Norwich some confidence and it showed throughout the second half, especially when Leroy Lita knocked it wide, almost putting the scores level.

But it was Przemyslaw Kazmierczak who finished the game off with a fine goal to give Derby their fifth win of the season.

Clinton Morrison denies Derby away win at Coventry

Coventry City 1 Derby County 1

After the defeat at Blackpool last week, Derby were determined to get back on track with the previous success of their Championship campaign by travelling to local rivals Coventry for a mid-week battle.

Rob Hulse gave Derby the lead in the 41st minute by heading in his fourth goal of the season.

All was looking good for Derby throughout the second half even though a fine volley from Miles Addison was saved by Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood - it should have been in the bag.

But in the dying minutes, Coventry were awarded a controversial throw-in by the linesman which allowed Coventry’s 69th minute substitute Clinton Morrison to hit in his first goal of the season, levelling the scores and giving Coventry a last gasp point.

It was cruel but these sort of games happen and they tend to always happen mid-week. Let’s just look forward to the return leg against Norwich at home on Tuesday and hope for another win.

Blackpool extend their unbeaten run by ending Derby’s

Blackpool 3 Derby 2

After Derby extended their unbeaten run to seven games by beating Plymouth at the weekend, the team travelled up to Blackpool hoping to keep the ball rolling with their successful run.

The home side fought hard in the first half, securing two goals thanks to Alan Gow slotting one past Stephen Bywater and Gary Taylor-Fletcher volleying in a cross from Keith Southern.

After the break, Derby took the iniative when Kris Commons scored a beautiful free-kick.

But the comeback was soon shortlived when Blackpool’s Ben Burgess scuffled in another Southern pass.

Mile Sterjovski managed to restore some pride for Derby with a late consolation goal but it just wasn’t to be Derby’s night - Blackpool secured all three points and ended Derby’s seven game unbeaten run.

Onwards to Midlands rivals Coventry for Saturday’s game…

Paul Green extend Derby’s unbeaten run against Plymouth at Pride Park

Derby 2 Plymouth 1

After the break for international World Cup qualifiers, Derby were refreshed, full of determination to continue their unbeaten run of six games to further their campaign for the 2008/9 season.

The first game of many over the next five weeks was at home against Plymouth Argyle, who were also determined to maintain their positive start to the season.

Unfortunately, it were the travellers who hit the back of the net first through Paul Gallacher’s 25 yard strike in the 8th minute.

The scoreline didn’t change for the majority of the first half until the dying minutes when Kris Commons‘ cut-back for Rob Hulse to connect from 12 yards, bring the Rams back into the game.

It wasn’t long after the break before Derby managed to up the ante after Paul Green’s shot was tipped on to the post by Plymouth’s Roman Larrieu before it trickled over the line.

This is the seventh game of Derby’s unbeaten run which just goes to show the potential in the team. Let’s hope similar results are possible in our future games against Blackpool, Coventry, Norwich and the big clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday 2nd (which will be airing on Sky Sports for those wanting to watch the game).

Nathan Ellington earn Derby a deserved away win at Norwich

Norwich City 1 Derby County 2

After the tense draw at Pride Park against Birmingham in the week, Derby were keen to improve on their five game unbeaten run with their journey across the Norfolk Broads to Delia Smith’s beloved Norwich City.

Rob Hulse opened the scoreline in the 26th minute with a beauty of a header to give Derby the away lead for the first half.

It was Derby’s keeper Roy Carroll who spoon fed the home side an easy opportunity to take scores level when he took down Leroy Lita in the penalty area which Sammy Clingan smoothly knocked in.

Thankfully, Norwich’s David Marshall ran out to the ball far too early, allowing Nathan Ellington to slot the winning goal in an open net.

With two weeks to rest during the World Cup qualifiers, Derby have an ideal position to take the reward of the last six games and build on it before facing Plymouth on the 18th.
